Why a 5-level principle?

The modular 5-level principle is the basis of a Starmed ITS-Terra 100 and is composed as follows:


1. chassis and adapter level

2. platform level

3. central tower level

4. bed level

5. monitoring level


All these levels can be changed, exchanged, supplemented or updated again and again. It doesn't matter if you need another chassis adapter, need to replace a damaged assembly, you need a new unit integration, want to change to a lower headroom, or a wider bed has become necessary. An ITS is incredibly flexible and cost-efficient in the long run.


What is a light-top sandwich construction?

As part of the development of the intensive care stretcher (Stern stretcher or later ITS-Terra 100), which began in 1995, we applied for a patent in 1997, which includes an intensive care stretcher with a removable bed/stretcher. The patent for this was granted with the number 197 32 724 and is still valid today. The basis of this patent was, among other things, the conviction that a removable stretcher or bed would have significant advantages in intensive care transport. To this day, we cannot confirm this thesis.


On the contrary. An attached stretcher not only increases the overall height of an intensive care stretcher, it also leads to enormous "top-heaviness" and mechanical space requirements, which is contrary to a compact, flat design. 


One principle of light-top sandwich construction is therefore to make the top part of an ITS, i.e. the bed, as light and compact as possible, thus significantly reducing the "top-heaviness" including the overall height. A Starmed ITS is therefore significantly lower in overall height compared to the self-proclaimed competition and thus safer. 


The second principle involves the thousandfold proven system of protected equipment integration, within the outer dimensions of an ITS-Terra and placed between platform and bed, i.e. in a "sandwich". Compared to laterally "attached" support variants, the Starmed sandwich principle ensures a small overall width, minimised equipment management, e.g. during transfers, a balanced and functional equipment arrangement, savings on equipment repairs and it protects patients from unwanted bolus applications, disconnections or extubations.


Good reasons

Our ITS-Terra has been continuously developed since 1998 and has proven itself thousands of times in use. A safe, highly flexible and mature product for use with/without ambulance chassis.


The intensive care transport system ITS-Terra 100 is still a bestseller today and there are

good reasons:

  7. Wide range of accessories, O2 and air-gas systems, 230V power systems, battery solutions, monitor arms, infusion pole, head fixations, hose and cable guides, etc.


More than 60% of all civil and military ITS-Terra 100s delivered throughout Europe since 1998 are still in use today. Many of these systems date back to the first years of delivery and have several thousand missions behind them.


How is that possible?

From the very beginning, we have used high-quality materials such as aerospace aluminium, carbon fibre, Nomex and special, low-wear plastics in combination with modern processing methods.


Almost all further developments in the bed, accessories and equipment holder area can also be used on all existing ITS-Terra 100 systems from serial number S001 onwards.


All components are developed directly at Starmed and tested partly in-house, but also at external test laboratories.


Our customers thus have the possibility to update their intensive care units again and again. The safety checks (STK) carried out annually by Starmed make a significant contribution to ensuring that a Starmed-ITS Terra 100 still functions perfectly and is up to date even after more than 15 years.

The bed does not consist of an attached, heavy stretcher. This would lead to an enormous head load and a significantly increased overall height.


Starmed also relies on lightweight construction elements for the bed.
